France on a Platter

Shopping for cheese at the markets.

Getting a taste of the French café scene figures prominently on everyone's must-do list when they visit France but unless you have an insider's knowledge of the best places to visit, even this mecca of café culture can disappoint. A pair of Australian Francophiles, Elizabeth Moir and Kay Schulda, have put together an 18 Day tour of Paris and country France, which takes in some of Frances's most venerable and Vogueish eateries.

Elizabeth and Kay's best-of list includes the cultish Café Marly at the Louvre, Bofinger, the oldest brasserie in Paris, and the Salon de Thé Ladurée, where you can sip fragrant tea and indulge in a selection of dainty cakes.

The humongous cheese platter at Astier, 44 rue Jean Pierre Timbaud, Paris in the 11th arrondissement.

Bruno Doucet La Réglade in Paris packs the flavour into his crème brulée and grand marnier soufflé. La Réglade, 49 Avenue Jean Moulinin the 14th arrondissement.

Astier, a traditional style restaurant with a wood panelled interior, serves hearty French fare and has an impressive wine list.
